IRISH MINISTRY OF EDUCATION
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM
In Ireland, education is compulsory for children between the ages of 6 and 15. The Irish education system is divided into several stages, beginning with primary education, which lasts for six years.
Secondary education consists of two key phases: • Junior Cycle (Secondary School) • Senior Cycle (High School)
The Junior Cycle is a three-year program for students aged 12 to 15 and falls under compulsory education. At the end of this cycle, students sit for a centralized examination, and successful candidates complete the compulsory phase of their education.
The Senior Cycle (High School) is not compulsory and typically lasts two years. However, some schools offer an optional Transition Year—a one-year program focused on personal and social development, work experience, and broadening educational experiences. When included, the Senior Cycle extends to three years.
In the final year of high school, students take one of three different state examinations, selected based on the type of education they have pursued. These final exams play a significant role in determining university admission.
